Random Bits

I can hardly believe how great the weather has been for us this week.  It's March and people are wearing shorts, tanks and sandals?!  With the longer days and the warm temperature, the children have enjoyed hours of play outside this week

Maple Syrup season is in full effect these days.  We just received some delicious syrup from one of our hockey parents and the verdict: YUMMY!  In one week the local Maple festivities begin. We look forward to the maple tour and the many maple treats that await us.

About one year ago we had our newly finished/flooded basement re-dry walled and carpeted.  Three months of reno's seemed like eternity.  We were so grateful to get our space back.

Project Update

I shared some before photos with you in my last post and thought I would share some of my progress this week.  It's slowly starting to come together, here are some pics:

Nice new pine top, very smooth
Brushed nickel hardware that I plan to spray paint black
Progress with the bead board insert panels.  Will need to spackle, sand and paint all gaps.
The nicely stained pine top in Minwax "Dark Walnut"
Loving it already.  Stay tuned!

Week end wrap up

It's the end of another busy weekend here in our household.  Hockey playoffs are very much under way for our family as we were on the road this weekend.  I did however bite the bullet and decided to hit HomeSense for the sign mentioned in the previous post.  Sometimes you have to just break down and buy it versus making it.  No regrets, lol!

We also began working on a unit I purchased about two months ago off Kijiji.  It's an old buffet that I plan to convert to a mudroom storage unit.  We started today by hacking dismantling some of the features that I did not like.  We removed the glass from the two doors, dismantled to top portion and cut off the top ends and bottom pieces that were quite water damaged.  We will need to replace the drawer bottoms with new plywood as well as the shelf within.  A fresh coat of paint, some new hardware and a nicely stained top will complete this masterpiece.  Here are some photos of our progress thus far (I apologize in advance for the photo quality-I had it on the wrong setting-oopsy!):

First coat of paint on and drying.  Will update you soon!

Random Bits

TGIF!  It's been a long week.  Looking forward to catching up this weekend on house chores and a little rest and relaxation!

"Go Team Go"!  My son and his rep ream are off to the OMHA finals!  The start their best of 5 series this weekend.  We are three wins away from the Championship!  I am one proud hockey Momma!

Looking for great home design ideas?  You will love this link.  The home decorating, design and remodelling ideas are endless.  This website hosts ideas for every room in your home as well as design style.

While into Homesense today, I spotted these really cool wooden signs with the "Keep Calm" saying.  I am debating on trying to tackle my own with some custom vinyl, or bite the bullet and just buy it.  It would make a great addition to the one lonely wall in our bedroom.

Lastly, today I had to say good-bye to two very dear co-workers.  Our team is now minus two great players:(  And while I wish them the best of luck as they pursue their new endeavour, I can't help but feel sad to see them go.  All the best girls!

Spring Mantel

It's been such a busy week I have lost track of time.  Funny how life can get in the way sometimes!  With March nearly half over I thought I should kick a little into spring gear, starting with our spring mantel.  I have played around with a few items and have settled with this so far:

I have incorporated some really distressed shutters (which I think I may paint out ivory) and some other neat little accessories.  The bird houses were from the dollar store.  First I painted them black and then followed with a coat of green and blue.  Once dry, I lightly distressed with the mouse sander to bring some of the undercoat through.  I also included the egg topiary that I made with a Styrofoam cone, decorative Styrofoam eggs, hot glue, some moss and paint.  Very easy to put together.  The moss fills in the gaps and disguises any imperfections.
 My clock from Winners!

Hard to believe that little bunny is just around the corner from making his appearance.  With more daylight hours and this perfect temperature,  I cannot wait to get outside and dabble in all my projects.  The thought of painting our kitchen and dining room is very much on my mind right now.  I am thinking of a shade of grey or a grey/taupe color.  Not sure yet, still playing that one up in my head.  By I do know that the current color has got to go!

Random Bits

While browsing Winner's during my lunch today, I came across this really cute decorative clock.  Had to do a double take with I read the price tag----$7.99!  And, it wasn't even on clearance.  I think it will make an excellent addition to our mantel shelf.

I am such a Pinhead!  Can't get enough of Pinterest and the endless ideas.  It is definitely my newest addiction!  If you are not familiar with Pinterest, click here and hold on to your seat.

Bathroom Ballard Shelf

This past summer we decided that it was time to give our main bathroom and fresh coat of paint.  It had been six years and time for a change.  We chose a nice chocolate brown paint from Home Depot (CIL Kitchen & Bath Light Chocolate).  So with the walls newly painted, we had to do away with a few of the old accents.  I picked up this really pretty Nicole Miller shower curtain from Bed Bath & Beyond for $50.  A little bit of a splurge for a shower curtain by I love it!  We also added a new mirror from Winners and some towels from Wal Mart.  I have to admit, the "George" brand towels are quite nice:). Although, it all seemed to tie together, there still seemed to be something missing.  I'll have to admit that for quite some time I have had a major phobia of putting nails in our walls.  The thought of regret and having to patch holes terrified me.  I've have learned to lighten up and take risks....woohoo!  So, inspired by Ballard Designs, we thought we'd tackle a "knock off" shelf.  Very easy to make, and several tutorials available online.  Check out this site here for easy instructions.  Love the end result!  We could have gone with the double shelf idea as well, but I like that I can decorate with taller items.
